History of Chinese Lacquer Art
China has thousand years of history, which left us countless treasures. While lacquer art is one of the most bright pearls in ancient culture treasury . So far, we have seven thousand years of history in creating and using lacquerware. From The Neolithic Age when we use red lacquer bowls and lacquer painted potteries to the Warring State Period and even to Han Dynasty, lacquerware is widely used and lacquer art had developed greatly. In Han Dynasty, there was scientific and organized method to produce lacquerware. In the Wei, Jin, the Northern and Southern dynasties, affected by painting, people break up the limit of plane coating to create new coloring skills on lacquerware. In Tang Dynasty, people developed gold and silver lacquerware with technique of plane peeling off and carved lacquer ware appeared. In Song and Yuan dynasties, lacquerware became more flourish because of the development of carved lacquer ware. To Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, the development of lacquerware reached its golden period. The long history of lacquer art is not only the history of technology improving, variety adding, quality improving and effect expanding, but also a history of invention, innovation, exploration. In lacquer art, there deposited abundant history and culture. The beauty of lacquer art integrates material, technique, art and culture. In the new historical period, lacquer art bursts with new energy.
Lacquer Painting
The basic use of liquid lacquer was to paint. So lacquer painting is the earliest art form in lacquer art. Trace to 7,000 years ago when being in period of Hemudu Culture, lacquer painting emerged. But for a long time, it was not an independent art, but just attached on wares, which were owned by the minority and could not be viewed by common people. So lacquer painting was not widely spreaded. Since the establishment of New China, artists have combined the traditional lacquer art with modern painting and created new history of Chinese lacquer painting art.
As a new kind of art, lacquer painting derives and separates from lacquerware decoration art. It is created by natural raw lacquer with feature of light, wear resisting and easy to collection. The quality of lacquer and relevant description skill decide the quality of lacquer painting. The diversity of art skills and the abundance of materials are the advantages of lacquer painting. Only with both good art skill and excellent basic diathesis, the painter can create a good lacquer painting. This enhances the difficulty of creation, but simultaneously increase the value of lacquer painting.
